In general, when we talk about graphic design, we refer to an activity consisting of the projection of communications that are appreciated through sight, and that is used to transmit a specific message. This is done with a specific objective, and usually, a certain group of people is also thought about when planning and sketching the first lines of each design. Throughout history, graphic design has evolved gradually. The arrival of modern graphic design was a great leap.
What is a graphic designer?
A graphic designer is, for many, a mere professional in charge of transmitting messages and transferring them to a visual format that produces an impact. But, besides, these professionals are true artists. They practice a design that covers all kinds of spheres in which a certain degree of audiovisual communication needs to be established. These range from the creation of illustrations in books and texts that need visual support to 3D animation, through posters or branding elements, such as logos. In them, designers can develop their creativity with creations that express what their client wants to communicate or the image of a certain brand or product.
Modern graphic design: origins and definition
Considering the tasks that graphic designers do, regardless of their style, it can already be specified what we mean when we talk about modern graphic design. In this case, it has nothing to do with the use of technology today, but with designs of all kinds created in the modern design movement framework. This emerged in the last century, but it comes from the end of the 19th century. Its origins are in the designs made at the end of the 19th century on posters, with a very marked style. In many posters, a design change began to be appreciated, with less artifice and simpler, and with fewer colours.
The industrial stage
The foundations of modern graphic design were already laid. But the influence of the industrial age that Europe and the United States were experiencing, especially in the first half of the 20th century, had an enormous influence on graphic design. Practically, without this era, the arrival of this graphic design trend cannot be understood.
Posters and other graphic elements of modern graphic design stood out for being full of color, with simple typefaces as well, without serifs. The text on the posters was short, clear, and concise, and supported the images. Also, it provided them with context and helped reinforce their image. In general, they followed the guidelines of modern graphic design: the absence of superfluous decoration, a style of a marked international character, and a commitment to industrial work.
